SWANSEA, Massachusetts – The 10th playing of the Massachusetts Super Senior Amateur Championship takes place this year, and qualifying for the year-end championship began Wednesday at Swansea Country Club.
Entries for the event are open to amateur golfers age 65+ as of Sept. 27, 2023, who have an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 12.0. The Championship Proper begins September 27 at LeBaron Hills Country Club in Lakeville.
Vincent Bucci (Old Sandwich Golf Club) started the round with a birdie on the first hole and shot 1-under on the front nine en route to a qualifier-leading score of 1-over-par 73. Rick Fleischman (Hopkinton Country Club) and Rick Cuozzo (Foxborough Country Club) also shot 1-over, with Cuozzo advancing for the first time.
First-time qualifiers also included John McMahon (Plymouth Country Club), who shot par on the first 12 holes. Other first-timers included Randy Millen (Pine Oaks Golf Club), Michael O’Riordan (Franklin Country Club), Patrick McKeown (Pocasset Golf Club), John Carroll (Indian Ridge Country Club), and Chuck Gomes (Poquoy Brook Golf Club), who got in on the number at 4-over 76. Carroll made par on the entire back nine to hold his spot.
Poquoy Brook Golf Club’s Bill Tribou and Chuck Gomes also qualified and will play in the Championship Proper, which is just down the road from their home club.
