Qualifying for the 2023 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship is now complete after qualifying events at Crystal Lake Golf Club in Haverhill and Wayland Country Club.
Entries for the event are open to amateur golfers age 55+ as of Sept. 5, 2023, who have an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 8.0. The 36-hole championship takes place September 4-5 at Hopkinton Country Club.
On August 14 at Crystal Lake, Bill Bieren (Indian Ridge Country Club) and Kevin Johnson (Meadow Brook Golf Club) qualified for the second straight year as each finished the round with a birdie to lead 12 qualifiers with a score of 2-over 73. Bieren made bogey on the first three holes but played the remaining holes 1-under.
Ken Whalley (Ferncroft Country Club), a qualifier for the U.S. Senior Amateur, which begins this Saturday at Martis Camp Club (CA), shot 75 to advance, as did Chris McCarthy (Bass Rocks Golf Club), whose birdie on the final hole to qualify on the number at 76.
On Tuesday at Wayland, Rick Santilli (Oakley Country Club) led the way with a 1-under, which comes about one month following his top-10 finish in Lowery Division of the Ouimet Memorial Tournament. Santilli closed out his first nine with an eagle (18th) to get to even par and went bogey-free the rest of the way.
Chris Piscatelli, of the host club, made four birdies to shoot even-par, while Gary Mattesen (Oak Ridge Golf Club) made birdie on the 9th to qualify on the number at 2-over 72.
