NORTON, Massachusetts – Qualifying for the Senior Amateur Championship rolled on Monday with the third of four qualifying events being held at Olde Scotland Links in Bridgewater. Thus far, 46 players have earned a spot in the Championship Proper which will be contested from September 28-29 at Pocasset Golf Club.
The Senior Amateur is open to amateur golfers who have reached their 55th birthday by September 28, 2021 and who have an active Mass Golf/GHIN Handicap Index at any public, private, semi-private, municipal or non-real estate Mass Golf member course/club not exceeding 8.0.
The first qualifying event was held on Monday, August 16 at Belmont Country Club. Ted McNamara (Old Sadwich Golf Club) and T.J. Ryan (Worcester Country Club) split medalist honors, both shooting marks of 2-over-par 73. The pair had similar days with both carding three birdies, but also each being plagued by five bogeys.
Three players shot 3-over 74 to all tie for second place. Ed Weber (Bedrock Golf Club) joined the pair of Rick Cuozzo and James Devlin, both of Foxborough Country Club, in shooting that mark. In total, Belmont saw 13 players qualify for the Championship Proper.
The next qualifier to be held was on Wednesday, August 25at Blissful Meadows Golf Course in Uxbridge. Once again, medalist honors were split and this time it was a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard. Mark Dennish (Old Sandwhich Golf Club), Eric Sandman (Hopkinton Country Club), and Arthur Fitzgerald (Whitinsville Golf Club) all shot 1-over-par 73 for the day.
There were 16 total players who survived the cutline at Blissful Meadows to move onto the Senior Amateur Championship. Donald Hein (Worcester Country Club) shot 2-over 74 to finish the round in sole possession of fourth place. Four players finished at 5-over 77 to sneak in above the cutline of 78.
On Monday at Olde Scotland Links in Bridgewater, Dan Mastrototaro (Cyprian Keyes G C) and Charles Johnson (Meadow Brook Golf Club) both got under par to split medalist honors. Both players sunk three birdies on their way to positing marks of 1-under-par 71 for the round.
Coming in just behind them, there was a four way tie for third place. Paul Puchol (Barnstable Golf), Steve Visco (Miacomet Golf Course), Daniel Rice (Boston Golf Club), and Thomas Mone (Hatherly Country Club) all shot an even-par 72. In total, 17 players made the cut at Olde Scotland Links.
