SANDWICH, Massachusetts (July 22, 2024) – Clouds took over the sky at The Ridge Club in the afternoon as 17 golfers teed off for a spot in the 37th U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur to be held right here in Massachusetts. Brae Burn CC is set to host the championship, which takes place in September.
On this late July afternoon, there was an enthusiasm in the air as the golfers found their playing partners, some of them longtime friends from past Mass Golf events, even amid vying for a spot in this USGA championship. As the U.S. Senior Am Qualifying finished up, the U.S. Women’s Mid Am Qualifying was just beginning.

U.S. WOMEN’S MID-AMATEUR QUALIFYING
With only 3 tee times and 6 groups going off the front and the back of the course, the golfers quickly found their places in the field of the Women’s Mid-Am. Our four Qualifiers were Megan Buck (North Easton, MA), Brooke Cooper (Greenwich, CT), Claire Richardson (Milton, MA), and Mary Mulcahy (Scituate, MA).
With the low score, medalist Megan Buck shot 72 (+1), finishing with a par on 18 to remain in first. Every year the U.S. Women’s Mid-Am is the big tournament on her calendar, especially this year with the championship being held locally. “Over the last couple of months, I’ve gotten to meet several Brae Burn members and they’ve been so welcoming. I know this is going to be such a well-run event.”
“It feels really good! It is a bit of a relief to put in a good score and secure the spot,” Buck mentioned how she was nervous but also excited to play this morning. Her round started a bit rough, “I made a bad bogey on the first hole– that was just nerves. After a couple bogeys, my caddy Shannon Johnson kept me level. I evened it out and then played well on the back nine.” Buck finished strong on the back and brought the medal home for her spot in the upcoming championship.
Cooper took second with a score of +3 and proudly took a photo with her son, Teddy, who caddied for her, marking this momentous moment for them.
Richardson shot +5 and Mulcahy shot +7 to claim their spots in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Am without having to worry about a playoff.
The alternates, Anna Morales (Peru), Meredith K Scala (Marion, MA), and Liz Gallinaro (Boston, MA) came up just behind at +8 and played a 3-for-2 playoff that lasted 2 holes with Scala and Morales making it through.
This wraps up our coverage of the two USGA qualifying events at The Ridge Club. We’ll see you next time!
