State Champs Crowned In 2024 MIAA State Finals Competitions

On Monday, October 21, the curtain fell on the high school fall golf season in Massachusetts, as three teams and three individuals rose to the challenge, capturing state championship titles in divisional showdowns spread across the state.

Division 1 (At The Haven CC, Boylston)

For the second straight year, St. John’s (Shrewsbury) ran away with the team title as the Pioneers collectively shot 294, for a 9-stroke margin of victory over runner-up Xaverian (303).

Ronan Mooney, who helped lead St. John’s to the title last year, claimed the individual championship this year with an impressive round of 4-under-par 68, winning by six strokes. Mooney’s round included birdies on four of his first five holes, along with an eagle on the par-5 14th. Adam Trani (74), Savar Bhasin (75), Cael Duggan (77), Derek Mulligan (85), and Andrew Marrone (86) also contributed to St. John’s team victory.

Division 2 (At Berkshire Hills CC, Pittsfield)

Zac Georgantas of Foxboro High School captured the individual title in dramatic fashion, winning a playoff after shooting a 1-under 71 to tie Michael McGrath of Pope Francis Prep (Springfield). In the playoff, Georgantas parred the par-5 10th hole to secure the victory, becoming Foxboro’s first individual champion since Scott Congdon in 2001. Paul LaCerda, a Mass Golf Rules Official for the past decade, is Foxboro’s boys golf coach.

McGrath, however, led Pope Francis Prep to the team championship, narrowly beating Nashoba by two strokes. Quinn Woytowicz and Jack Ouellette each shot 78, with additional contributions from Jack Dias (81), Brody Faneuff (82), and Tanner Kmetz (83) rounding out the winning effort.

Division 3 (At Foxborough CC, Foxboro)

Reid Ohanesian led Ayer-Shirley to its first-ever state team championship, finishing as medalist with a score of 3-over 75. Teammates Tommy Bergin (83), Aadi Patel (85), Jason Turner (88), Matt Marchand (99), and Troy Leighton (107) contributed to the team’s overall performance, which resulted in an eight-stroke victory over runner-up Monomoy
