BERNARDSTON, Massachusetts – The second round of the 101st Mass Junior Amateur Championship brings with it match play, as the low 16 competitors from the field see another day in hopes of winning the Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship.
John Broderick of Dedham C&PC is taking home some serious hardware. The 15-year-old Belmont Hill School student is not only taking the Joseph M. Batchelder Memorial Trophy home for being medalist in the Pre-Junior division, he is also the overall stroke play medalist for the Mass Junior, firing a 36-hole score of 2-under 142.
“I didn’t really miss a shot today,” said Broderick. “I hit almost every fairway and almost every green which helped. This course is really tight off the tee and you have to hit the greens or else you’re in trouble.”
Broderick will be making his first match play appearance at the Massachusetts Junior, but he has had match play experience coming into the event.
“This year it was my goal to get to match play,” said Broderick. “Obviously it’s a bonus to get medalist out of it as well.
Broderick has a win in match play events as well, winning the Spinal Technology Challenge Cup 15 and under division tournament last year.
Also making it to match play out of the 14 and 15 year old’s is James Robbins of Renaissance and Mason Dumas of Quaboag CC. Robbins shot 4-over par for the two day qualifier, with Dumas shooting a combined 5-over par for the two days. Robbins will be playing Riley Rohlfs in the 8 and 9 matchup in the first round of match play, while Dumas will be taking on Matthew Epstein in 5 and 12 matchup.
