SALEM/LAKEVILLE, Massachusetts – With the Mass Open less than a month away, 30 more players locked up a spot in the championship between the qualifying rounds at Kernwood Country Club on Monday and LeBaron Hills Country Club on Wednesday.
The Championship Proper will take place June 8-10 at Longmeadow Country Club in Longmeadow. The Championship Proper will consist of 54 holes of stroke play with the low 50 scorers and ties or anyone within 7 strokes of the leader after 36 holes advancing to the final round.
Entries are open to professional golfers and also amateur golfers who have an active USGA GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4 (as determined by the April 22, 2021 Handicap Revision), or who have completed their handicap certification.
Battling swirling winds along Kernwood’s seaside layout in Salem, Matthew Naumec (GreatHorse) grinded out an even-par 70 to earn medalist honors and lead the 16 qualifiers who made the cut. Naumec, a former Boston College standout who played in the 2019 U.S. Open, shot a 2-under 33 on the front nine with a pair of birdies. Naumec, who recently regained his amateur status, last competed in the 2018 Mass Open which took place at his home club.
After playing in the Mass Open last year, Jordan Burke (Needham Golf Club) shot a pair of 36s on each nine and ended his round with a birdie to shot 2-over 72, while Renaissance golfers Tim Acquaviva and Stephen Quillinan each shot 74. Acquaviva was a first-time qualifier as were Southern New Hampshire University’s Jack Pepin (74) and North Carolina State commit Joseph Lenane (KOHR Golf) (76).
Ethan Whitney, who plays for the Temple University men’s golf, team was among six players to get in one the number at 7-over 77. Whitney made birdie on the par-5 13th (525, longest hole), helping him cut into the championship for the second consecutive year.
At the LeBaron Hills qualifier, 14 players earned an automatic spot in the Championship Proper. Former University of Maryland standout Peter Knade won medalist honors with a 1-under 71.
Jared Winiarz (Norton Country Club) had the best start of the day by going 3-under through his opening three holes and carding an even-par 72 to qualify for the Mass Open for the first time since 2017. Winiarz shot 34 on the front nine and added a fourth birdie on the ninth hole.
Several young standouts amateurs qualified for the first time, including Aidan O’Donovan (Cummaquid Golf Club) at 2-over; Casey Mills (John F Parker Golf Course) at 2-over; Matthew Johnson (Charter Oak Country Club) at 3-over; Ryan Chang (Belmont Country Club) at 3-over; and Colin Andrade (The Ridge Club) on the number at 4-over.
