BOURNE, Massachusetts (April 29, 2024) – Clear skies and warm temperatures greeted a field of 99 players Monday at Pocasset Golf Club on Cape Cod for the first Mass Golf Championship qualifier of the season. Out of that field, 17 guaranteed their place in the 114th Massachusetts Open, including seven Massachusetts amateurs.
The Championship Proper will take place June 10-12 at Willowbend in Mashpee, just 12 miles down the road from Pocasset. Willowbend, which opened in 1992, is hosting the Mass Open for the first time but has hosted several championships, including the 2023 Mass Mid-Amateur Championship.
Entries are open to professional golfers and also amateur golfers who have an active USGA GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4 (at the time of registration) or who have completed their handicap certification.
Florida’s Eric Beringer, who competed on the PGA Tour Americas last season, notched medalist honors by shooting 3-under 69, solidifying his spot with an eagle on the par-5 16th.
Matt Cornuet, superintendent at Holly Ridge Golf Course, also sank four birdies to shoot an even-par 72 and earn a spot in the Mass Open for the first time. Cornuet finished T4 in the 2019 Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship. Boston College golfer Mac Bredahl (Sandy Burr Country Club) was one stroke behind him at 73
Massachusetts pros Athan Goulos (Peabody), Shayne Sakson (Ocean Edge GC), and Wyatt Frazier (Woods Hole GC) also advanced via qualifying. Of the three, only Goulos has previously competed in the Mass Open, his best finish being T35 in 2019 at Vesper Country Club.
Alex Stimpson (Sacconnesset Golf Club), who finished 5th in 2014 at Weston, is returning to the Mass Open for the first time since 2018. Fellow Cape Cod amateur Trevor Kinney (The Ridge Club) and Thomas Harrison (Old Sandwich Golf Club) also qualified on the number at 2-over 74. Despite a triple-bogey 7 on the second hole, former Mass Mid-Amateur champion Phil Smith made birdie on the final hole to shoot 74 and earn his first Mass Open spot in nearly a decade. Jeffrey Kilday also rallied late, with birdies on the par-5s 16 and 17 to get above the cutline.
