11 Earn Automatic Bids Into Mass Open Through Final Qualifier At Pleasant Valley

SUTTON, Massachusetts (May 28, 2024) – The final Mass Open qualifier of the year took place Tuesday at Pleasant Valley Country Club. Among the 11 who advanced were 10 amateurs, including a pair of members from the host club.

The field is almost set for the Mass Open, which will take place June 10-12 at Willowbend in Mashpee. The club opened in 1992 and is hosting the Mass Open for the first time but has hosted several championships, including the 2023 Mass Mid-Amateur Championship.

Entries are open to professional golfers and also amateur golfers who have an active USGA GHIN® Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4 (at the time of registration) or who have completed their handicap certification.

Mashpee native Kyle Puchol (Barnstable Golf), who attends nearby Assumption College, split medalist honors with Cooper Griffin (Woodland Golf Club) by finishing 3-under-par 69. Puchol made eight birdies, including three of the four final holes, while Griffin was 3-under on the front nine and even on the back.

Puchol’s teammate Jack Moy qualified alongside Pleasant Valley member Scott Vandenburgh, who also previously played Assumption. Moy, who played in the 2022 Mass Open, made a bogey on the 4th but played the final 14 holes at bogey-free 2-under.

Ben Snyder (Woodland Golf Club) had the best rally of the day. After shooting 4-over on the front nine, he finished 4-under on the back nine with a birdie and eagle, respectively, on the final two holes.

Jim Hackenberg (Easley, SC), best known for inventing the Orange Whip training tool, was the lone pro to advance, making it in on the number at 1-over 73. Hackenberg most recently played in the 2019 and 2021 Mass Open.
