PITTSFIELD, Massachusetts (May 16, 2024) – The Country Club of Pittsfield has hosted a qualifier for the Mass Open every year it has been held since 2019, and on Thursday, 15 players ventured out west and earned an automatic spot in the championship.
The Championship Proper will occur June 10-12 at Willowbend in Mashpee. The club opened in 1992 and is hosting the Mass Open for the first time but has hosted several championships, including the 2023 Mass Mid-Amateur Championship.
Entries are open to professional golfers and also amateur golfers who have an active USGA GHIN® Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4 (at the time of registration) or who have completed their handicap certification.
For the second straight year, Virginia’s Brandon Berry traveled from one Commonwealth to the other to qualify at Country Club of Pittsfield. He sank seven birdies, including three straight on holes 4-6, to shoot medalist honors with a 6-under-par 65
CJ Winchenbaugh (Oyster Harbors Club), finalist in last year’s Mass Junior Amateur, led all Massachusetts finishers by shooting 67, with six birdies including a bogey-free back nine. Fellow amateur Sean Magarian (Pleasant Valley Country Club) rallied for a 68 with birdies on three of the final four holes.
Vermont’s Jared Nelson, a former UConn standout and the 2022 New England Amateur champion, advanced with consecutive eagles on the par-5s 15 and 16. Former Boston College standout Nicholas Cummings (Marlborough Country Club) started with three straight birdies and made it on the cutline at 2-under 69.
The next Mass Open qualifier will take place on Monday at Allendale Country Club and conclude the week after, May 28, at Pleasant Valley Country Club.
