Even Par The Mark To Reach As 17 Players Progress To Mass Open At Allendale Qualifier

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Massachusetts (May 20, 2024) – The field for the 114th Massachusetts Open is nearly filled, but another sizable group of local golfers qualified for the championship by shooting even-par 72 or better at Monday’s qualifier at Allendale Country Club. Among the 17 qualifiers, 12 were amateurs from Massachusetts.

The Championship Proper will occur June 10-12 at Willowbend in Mashpee. The club opened in 1992 and is hosting the Mass Open for the first time but has hosted several championships, including the 2023 Mass Mid-Amateur Championship.

Entries are open to professional golfers and also amateur golfers who have an active USGA GHIN® Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4 (at the time of registration) or who have completed their handicap certification.

Brendan Hunter (Red Tail Golf Club), the 2016 Mass Amateur champion, shot the best score among the locals by turning in a 5-under 67 to qualify for his seventh straight Mass Open. Two years ago at Longmeadow he placed 12th overall. On Monday, he finished one stroke off medalist William Robbins (Brooksville, FL), who has played several nationwide development tours.

Kyzar Joshi (Nashawtuc Country Club), a First Tee Massachusetts esteemed alumnus and national scholarship winner, was among the local amateurs to qualify for their first Mass Open. Joshi, who attends Hamilton College, made four birdies and saved par on the final hole to finish even par and qualify on the number. Collin McMahon-Shea, also from Nashawtuc, also qualified on the number.

Fellow local amateurs Christian Lightner (Oakley Country Club), Ryan Scollins (Franklin Country Club) and Will Campbell (Bayberry Hills/Bass River) all are set to play in the Mass Open for the first time. Campbell, who placed top 5 in the 2023 Ouimet Memorial Tournament, carded bogey-free round with birdies on holes 6 and 9, while Lightner made three consecutive birdie to open the back nine after making the turn at 2-over. Scollins, who took third in last year’s New England Amateur, made the turn at even before closing with a bogey-free 2-under on the back nine.

Alex Landry (Indian Ridge Country Club) and Alejandro Soto (TPC Boston) are returning to the Mass Open for the first time in years. Landry, who shot a 69, is back in the Mass Open for the first time since 2021, while Soto, who qualified for U.S. Open Final Qualifying last week, shot a 71. Casey Mills (John F. Parker Municipal Golf Course) also shot 72 to earn his third straight trip to the Mass Open.

Newton’s Alejandro Soto is returning to the Mass Open for the first time in five years. (David Colt, file)
