27 Advance To 2024 Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship

CHICOPEE/LYNNFIELD, Massachusetts (June 25, 2024) – Chicopee Country Club and Sagamore Spring Golf Club hosted the first two qualifiers for the 2024 Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship. In total, 27 players earned an automatic spot in the popular championship, which will take place July 30-31 at Ledges Golf Club in South Hadley.

Entries are open to any amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf Membership at a public golf course, a course/club that provides playing opportunities for the general public seven days a week, and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 12.0 (at the time of registration).

On Monday, June 18, at Chicopee, Seattle University standout Liam Gill (Sandy Burr Country Club led all 15 qualifiers by shooting 2-under-par 69. Gill, who played in U.S. Open Final Qualifying, made an eagle on the second hole and added three birdies later in the round.  Assumption College’s Ethan Beauchemin (Student Member/MIAA) shot 72, while 16-year-old Michael Murray (Westover Golf Club), former Penn State golfer Geoff Vartelas and longtime APL competitor Stephen Larson (Cyprian Keyes Golf Club) all shot 73.

Chuck Edler (Cold Spring Country Club) and Steven Elkins (Amherst Golf Club), both playing among the senior ranks, also qualified by shooting 73 and 74, respectively. Cody Miller (Ledges Golf Club) also shot 73 to make it to the championship at his home club.

On Tuesday, June 25, at Sagamore Spring, Michael Papamechail (Beverly Golf & Tennis Club) and Ryan O’Rourke (Green Hill Muni Golf Course) finished atop the field by shooting 1-over 71 to lead 12 qualifiers. Papamechail made four birdies, including on the par 3 18th, to earn his first trip to the championship since 2020, while O’Rourke shot birdie-free 1-under over the final 12 holes to advance for the second straight year.

George Wright Golf Course members Veo Robert and Taylor Michie both shot 73 to qualify, and Sagamore members Thomas Sciaudone and George Deroche shot 74 and 75, respectively. Patrick Maloney, a 15-year-old from Wakefield, made three consecutive birdies on holes 10-12, helping him qualify on the number with a 75. Sean Winchell (Gannon Municipal Golf Course) also shot 75 to qualify for the second straight year.
