Qualifying for the 116th Massachusetts Amateur Championship continued this week with a pair of events Wednesday at Blissful Meadows Golf Club in Uxbridge and Foxborough Country Club. In total 16 players guaranteed a spot in the Championship Proper.
Framingham Country Club is hosting the Mass Amateur for the first time this year. Play is scheduled for July 8-12. After 36 holes of stroke play, the low 32 scorers will advance to match play. Entries are open to amateur golfers with an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.6 (at the time of registration).
At Blissful Meadows, perhaps no single shot was more crucial throughout the day than when David Holmes (Blackstone National Golf Club) aced the 158-yard, par-3 5th, as that hole-in-one propelled him to a 1-over 73, the number needed to qualify for the event.
Cael Duggan (Highfields Golf & Country Club) shot 3-under-par 69 to lead the field. Duggan, a 15-year-old rising junior at St. John’s High School (Shrewsbury), made five birdies, including three on a bogey-free back-nine stretch. Chris Erickson (Dedham Country and Polo Club) also advanced with a 1-under 71, riding a bogey-free 3-under stretch on the front nine.
Teenagers Aarav Lavu (Blue Hill Country Club) and Gavin Lane (Nashawtuc Country Club) shot even-par to advance. Lavu, the 2022 Young Golfers’ Amateur champion, was 2-over on the front nine but shot 2-under on the back, while Lane was bogey-free 1-under on the back nine.
At Foxborough, Patrick Kilcoyne (Woodland Golf Club) shot 2-under 70 to earn medalist honors by a commanding four strokes. The Gettysburg College standout was 2-over on the front nine but carded three birdies and closed out the round with an eagle on the 18th.
Foxborough members Ethan Sullivan and Daniel Bukoff shot 2-over to qualify alongside Michael Souliotis (Haverhill Golf & Country Club) & Max Ash (Weston Golf Club). Ash, who plays for Swarthmore College, made birdie on the final two holes to get above the cutline.
Two-time champion Steven Tasho (Thorny Lea Golf Club) qualified on the number at 3-over 75, making a pair of birdies, including on the opening hole. Michael Matheson (Walpole Country Club) also advanced with a 75.
Mass Amateur qualifying concludes next week with four events in four days between Monday-Thursday.
