Qualifying for the 116th Massachusetts Amateur Championship was in full swing this week (June 3-5) with five events taking place over three days. In total, 43 players advanced to the Championship Proper, including Molly Smith, who made history as the first woman to compete in the Mass Amateur last year and is set to make her mark again this year.
Framingham Country Club is hosting the Mass Amateur for the first time this year. Play is scheduled for July 8-12. After 36 holes of stroke play, the low 32 scorers will advance to match play. Entries are open to amateur golfers with an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.6 (at the time of registration).
On Monday at Wianno Club, Brian Bassett and Alan Rose, members of nearby Oyster Harbors, were among eight players to qualify, shooting 68 and 71, respectively. Rose shot 3-under on the back nine to advance on the cutline at 1-over-par. Wianno member Brian Fleckles also shot 69, going bogey-free 2-under over his final 13 holes. Though he carded five birdies and an eagle, Kevin Hendrickson (The Golf Club at Turner Hill) backed his way in with a 69, even after making a bogey on the final four holes.
On Tuesday at Blue Hill, University of Central Florida standout Molly Smith made birdie on three of her final five holes to rally back to even par and earn a second straight trip to the Mass Amateur. Wollaston Golf Club members Ernest McAlister and Jake Ratti led the way by shooting 69 and 70, respectively. McAlister shot bogey-free 4-under on the front nine and finished in the lead at 3-under 69.
At Dennis Pines, Max Emmerich (Kernwood Country Club) was medalist with a 2-under 70 round that included two eagles for a bogey-free front nine 32. Former Wareham High School standout Evan Loxley (USGA/Mass Golf) shot 5-over on the front nine but made three birdies and an eagle on the back to finish even-par. Zach Pelzar (Weston Golf Club) made birdie on 17 and Bryan Adkison (Granite Links Golf Club) made birdie on the 18th as each finished 1-over 73 to qualify on the number.
On Wednesday at William J. Devine at Franklin Park in Boston, the cutline was 2-under 68 or better. Matt Cowgill (Granite Links Golf Club), who played in U.S. Open Final Qualifying on Monday, led the way at 6-under 64. Chris Bornhorst, the 2021 Mass Amateur semifinalist, shot 66 to match Cole Manning, who made eagle on the final two holes, capping off a score of 30 on the back nine. Drake Hull (Granite Links Golf Club) made eagle on the final show to finish 2-under.
At Hyannis Golf Course, Greg Everson (Barnstable Golf) made seven birdies to lead the way at 4-under 67, his only blemish being a late triple bogey. Jake Mrva (Worcester Country Club) finished with a 69, one ahead of Robert Reni (Country Club of New Bedford), who made one birdie with a par on the remaining holes. Carter Nunez (George Wright Golf Course), a former USGA Boatwright Intern for Mass Golf, made birdie on the final hole to qualify on the number at even-par 70. He also played in U.S. Open Final Qualifying on Monday.
