SEEKONK, Massachusetts – For the second year in a row, a quartet from Thorny Lea Golf Club has claimed the top prize at the Dolly Sullivan, an annual two-day tournament which features teams of four from Mass Golf Member Clubs which compete for top gross and net division titles. This year’s event was held at Ledgemont Country Club.
Capturing the gross division title with a score of 9-under par 65 was the team from Thorny Lea GC that was made up of Laura Jean Mann, Courtney Lee, Lorraine Feeney and Megan Buck. They finished two strokes better than the second-place team from Boston Golf Club that included Sue Curtin, Marlene Tartaro, Carolyn Coffey and Ellie DeAndrade.
Rounding out the top three in the gross division was the Bedrock Golf Club team made up of Christine Gagner, Loren Le Gassick, Mary Gale and Rita Bedard. They finished with a 6-under par 68.
This annual team event was introduced in 1982 in honor of Dolly Sullivan, who was the niece of American golf legend Francis Ouimet. Sullivan served as golf coach at nearby Milton Academy for 32 years. The event has not only become a must-play for teams from across the state, but it also raises important funds for the WGAM/Dolly Sullivan Junior Scholarship Program.
Taking home honors in the Net division is the team from Hopkinton Country Club which finished with a 17-under par 57. The makeup of that team included Carol Mcgowan, Elizabeth Levins, Grace Roche and Alyssa Little. They were able to edge the team from Wellesley Country Club, which included Lauren Sexeny, Vicky Hadden, Jessica Del Prete and Ellen Kaufman by just one stroke as they shot a 16-under par 58.
Finishing below them in a tie were the teams from Belmont Country Club and Marshfield Country Club. Terrie Bloom, Jordan Hamelsky, Karen Kotzen and Mary Bartfield made up the team from Belmont, while Susan Macdonald, Carolyn Romano, Shelley H. Carson and Denise Royer made up the competitors from Marshfield. Both teams finished with a 14-under par 60.
