The Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship will take place at Olde Scotland Links in Bridgewater for the first time this summer (August 7-8), and the path to qualifying for this championship for public golfers began on June 20.
Entries for the event are open to amateur golfers whose handicap index does not exceed 12.0 and a course/club that provides playing opportunities for the general public seven days a week.
At Olde Scotland Links, Oliver Shih (Fresh Pond Golf Club), led 15 qualifiers with a 3-under-par 69 that included six birdies. Bryan Adkison (Granite Links Golf Club) and Nicholas Piersall (Newton Commonwealth Golf Course) tied for second and both shot 2-under-par 70, while Angelo McCullough (The Meadow at Peabody) shot 1-under-par 71.
At Cranberry Valley GC, another 16 golfers qualified for the Championship Proper. Joseph Berggren (Pinehills Golf Club), John Salerno (Five Iron Golf – Boston), and Andrew Abbott (Granite Links Golf Club) all shot 2-over 74s to share medalist honors. Michael Serijan (Cranberry Valley GC) fired four birdies at his home course to also qualify with a 4-over 76.
Over at Beverly Golf & Tennis Club, Matthew Heath (Weathervane Golf Club) shot 1-over 71 to lead 15 golfers advancing to the championship proper. Heath made three birdies on the back nine en route to a 1-under finish. Rounding out the top three were Veer Bhasin, (Cyprian Keyes Golf Club) and Brandon Farrin (Beverly Golf & Tennis Club) who both shot 2-over 74 to punch their ticket to the Olde Scotland Links for the championship.
Andy Lesenski (Country Club of Greenfield) and Tyler Cleary (George Wright Golf Course) posted the only two under-par rounds on Thursday at Gardner Municipal GC. Cleary had back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12 en route to a bogey free 2-under back nine. Nic Gebhardt (Wachusett Country Club) overcame a quadruple bogey in the middle of his round with six birdies throughout the day to shoot even-par and round out the top three, along with Jonathan Rajcula (Hopedale Country Club) and Randy Parker (Woburn CC 19th Hole Club) who also shot even-par 71. While they didn’t make the cut, Derek Doiron (Cyprian Keyes Golf Club) and Bill DiNardo (Gardner Municipal Golf Course) made a hole-in-one on the 8th (152 yards) and 16th hole (242 yards), respectively.
