BELMONT, Massachusetts – In the first of four qualifiers for the 61st Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship, taking place September 28-29 at Pocasset Golf Club, 13 players earned a qualifying spot into the Championship Proper on Monday at Belmont Country Club.
Ted McNamara (Old Sandwich Golf Club) made birdie on the 16th and 17th to finish 2-over and split medalist honors with T.J. Ryan (Worcester Country Club). Ryan made bogey on two of his first three holes before closing with an even-par 35 on the back nine, which included birdies on par-3 12th (154-yards) and par-4 14 (388-yards).
Exactly 13 players made it in at the cutline at 5-over 76. Additional competitors who finished one spot below the final qualifying spot earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.
Playing at their home club, both Milton Yanofsky and George Katz earned a qualifying spot after shooting 75 and 76, respectively.
Mike McKenna (Far Corner GC), who qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur last month, also shot 75 to qualify. McKenna made the cut after day one of last year’s Mass Senior Amateur at Willowbend.
Colin Ahern (Indian Ridge Country Club), a former hockey standout at Providence College, also made the cut at 75 to get into the Championship Proper for the second time in three years.
