NORTON, Massachusetts – The final guaranteed spots into the Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship were up for grabs Monday in the two different qualifying events for the Championship Proper. A total of 19 golfers advanced to the championship, which will take place August 2-5 at Indian Pond Country Club in Kingston.
The Junior Amateur Championship is open to amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf/GHIN Handicap Index at any public, private, semi-private, municipal or non-real estate Mass Golf member course/club and who have reached their 14th birthday and will not reach their 19th birthday by midnight August 5.
At Westborough Country Club, Colby Sanville (MIAA) earned medalist honors as the only player to shoot under par, finishing with a 1-under-par 71. Sanville started with consecutive birdies on the first two holes and finished with six birdies total.
Zach Pelzar (Weston Golf Club) finished solo second, shooting 1-over 73. Late birdies on the 12th and 16th holes helped Pelzar rally to move up the scoreboard. A total of five competitors finished the round shooting 5-over 77, good for a place in the Championship Proper.
At Bear Hill Golf Club in Stoneham, the pair of Sean Dully (Kernwood Country Club) and Evan Buddenhagen (Essex County Club) split medalist honors by shooting 2-over-par 73. After making bogey on the 10th hole, Dully had a strong finish, recording three birdies across his final 8 holes of play to help him grab a share of the lead. Buddenhagen also made birdie late, on the 12th and 18th holes, as he split low honors with Dully.
Miles Buddenhagen (Essex County Club), Evan’s younger brother, also made the cut at Bear Hill, carding a 6-over 77 in his round. Adam Heinze (Haverhill Golf and Country Club) and John Hiller (Bay Club at Mattapoisett) finished the day tied for third at 3-over 74.
