EAST FALMOUTH – A handful of players went low at Cape Cod Country Club on Monday, with 21 total clinching a spot in the 40th Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship.
Entries are open to amateur golfers who have reached their 25th birthday by September 18, 2023, and who have an active Mass Golf Membership with a Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4 (at the time of registration).
Former Holy Cross standout Jake Peer (Winchester CC) led the way at 5-under-par 66, knocking down six birdies, while Trevor Kenney (The Ridge Club) opened with three straight birdies en route to a 69.
Michael Walker, the general manager of Cape Cod National Golf Club, made an eagle on the par-5 3rd and made three straight birdies on the back nine to qualify. Cape Cod National will host this year’s Massachusetts Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.
Christopher Bornhorst (Brae Burn Country Club), who played for Babson College and the University of Colorado, qualified for his first Mass Mid-Amateur, with a late charge of three birdies over the final four holes.
Will Maier (Miacomet Golf Course) made birdie on the final two holes to make the cut on the number (73). Andrew Donovan (Indian Pond Country Club), John Woodman (Wollaston Golf Club), and Stephen Planeta (The Tour) also made birdie on the final hole to sneak in above the cut.
