Thursday marked the end of the qualifying window for the 115th Mass Amateur Championship, with Bass River Golf Club and Blissful Meadow Golf Club hosting the final two sites. A total of 18 golfers made it through, with nine coming from each site.
This year’s Mass Amateur, taking place July 10-14 at Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, is open to amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf Membership with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 4.4 (at the time of registration). Entrants must also have played and posted five rounds at any Mass Golf member club/course within 12 months of the entry close date.
At Blissful Meadows, Derek Ducharme (Whitinsville Golf Club) carded a 2-under 70 to claim medalists honors. Two strokes back were Shawn Seybert (Norton Country Club) and 2023 U.S. Senior Open qualifier Brenden Hester (Pleasant Valley Country Club). Also among the golfers advancing to Essex is Hartford rising senior Michael Amari (Northern Spy Country Club), who made it to the quarterfinals two years ago, as he shot 1-over. Reigning Whitinsville club champion, JR Robinson, who shot 1-under during his last three holes to shoot 3-over 75 and advance.
Over at Bass River GC in Yarmouth, Nolan Skaggs (Plymouth Country Club) fired a 4-under 68 to earn medalists honors. After trading some bogeys and birdies his first six holes, Skaggs finished bogey free over his last 12 holes, including birdies at the 17th and 18th to end his round. Dave Carey (Walpole Country Club) made eagle on the par-5 17th to catapult himself above the cutline. A pair of seniors, Tom Dwyer, 57 of Norfolk Golf Club, and Ronald Laverdiere, 64 of Crumpin-Fox Club, shot 69 and 70, respectively, to qualify. Bass River member Will Campbell, who plays for Methodist University, also shot 69.

The 2023 Mass Amateur Championship will take place next month at Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Connor Willett will look to defend the championship when the tournament gets underway on July 10.
