An even 10 total player advanced the this year’s Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship in the first of six qualifying events taking place for the Championship Proper.
The 39th Mass Mid-Amateur Championship will take place September 19-21 at Marlborough Country Club. Entries are open to amateur golfers who have reached their 25th birthday by September 19, 2022 and who have an active Mass Golf Membership with a Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4 (at the time of registration).
Leading the charge was Renaissance member Jeffrey Weishaar, whose fourth birdie of the day on the 18th put him at 2-under-par 70 and earned him medalist honors for the day and got him back in the championship for the second straight year. Now he’ll look to make the cut again for the first time since 2018. Matt Vaughn (Charles River Country Club) also finished under-par with three birdies for a 71.
Andrew Wester (Concord Country Club) shot even-par 72 to qualify for the first time as did former Mass Golf Junior Player of the Year Jake Shuman (71). Joseph Iacona (Vesper Country Club), Andrew Orpik (Granite Links Golf Club), and Brad Batchelder (Andover Country Club) also are through for the first time, each shooting 2-over to make the cut. Iacona had a clutch birdie on the par-3 17th that put him above the cutline.
Though he wasn’t able to qualify, Dan Brennan (Lexington Golf Club) walked away with an ace, the second one recorded at a Mass Golf qualifier this week. Brennan made his on the par-3, 205-yard 15th hole at Renaissance.
