With the 114th Massachusetts Amateur Championship just over a month away, 26 more players earned a guaranteed spot into the Championship Proper via qualifying events at Westover Golf Course, South Shore Country Club, and Merrimack Valley Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Mass Amateur Championship, set to take place July 11-15 at Concord Country Club, is open to amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf Membership with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 4.4 (at the time of registration).
At Westover, 10 players earned a qualifying spot. UConn rising sophomore Eric Boulger (Walpole Country Club) split medalist honors with former Rhode Island College golfer Nathan Patterson (Northampton Country Club) as both shot 2-under-par 70. Patterson, who advances to the Mass Amateur for the first time, eagled the par-5, 9th hole (542 yards) as both players shot 35 on each nine.
Playing at his home course, Springfield College’s Aidan McBride qualified for his first Mass Amateur, as he shot even-par 72 to match Dean Godek (Agawam Municipal Golf Course), a three-time U.S. Amateur qualifier. UConn teammates Vikram Konanki (Woodland Golf Club) and Trevor Lopez (Winchester Country Club) shot 1-over 73, while Ronald Laverdiere (Crumpin-Fox Club), a 63-year-old from Amherst, made it in at the cutline of over 2-over 74.
At South Shore, Concord teenager Tyler Bruneau (Nashawtuc Country Club) put on a clinic as he tallied five birdies, plus an eagle on the par-5 13th (525 yards), to take medalist honors and lead 9 qualifiers. The rising senior at Concord-Carlisle High School started his round with a birdie and proceeded to sink four more to shoot 32 on the front nine.
Shuvam Bhaumik (Thorny Lea Golf Club), the runner-up at last year’s Mass Mid-Amateur, shot 2-under to earn a return invite to the Mass Amateur. John Hadges (Thorny Lea Golf Club), the 2008 and 2010 Mass Amateur champion, shot even-par 72 to qualify. First-time qualifiers included Chris Schieffer (Marion Golf Club), Trevor Drew (Long Meadow Golf Club) and John Cammarano (Wellesley Country Club).
At Merrimack Valley, 7 more individuals qualified for the Mass Amateur, all shooting either 1-over or 2-over. Jack McDonald (Allendale Country Club), Phil Miceli (Sagamore Spring Golf Club), and Robbie Donahoe (Wollaston Golf Club) split medalist honors at 1-over. McDonald and Donahoe are first-time qualifiers.
Holy Cross commit Matt Williams (Boston Golf Club) also is in for the first time as made an eagle on the par-5 12th (491 yards) to get back to even par. Despite three consecutive bogeys after that, he birdied the par-3 17th (185 yards) to get back to 2-over. Patrick Bean (Oak Hill Country Club) also shot 2-over to qualify for the first time.
