Round 1 of qualifying for the 114th Massachusetts Amateur Championship began Tuesday at Pleasant Valley Country Club, followed by another qualifier Wednesday at Ipswich Country Club. A total of 18 golfers clinched a spot in this year’s championship, taking place July 11-15 at Concord Country Club.
The Championship is open to amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf Membership with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 4.4 (at the time of registration).
At Pleasant Valley, eight golfers made the cut for the next round of qualifying. Jack Moy (Pleasant Valley Country Club), the runner-up at the 2021 Mass Junior Amateur made five birdies to lead the field at 1-under 71. Moy also qualified for the Mass Open at Gardner Municipal Golf Course. Lane Bohman (Eastward Ho!) shot an even-par 72 that included a 34 on the front nine, while Ethan Whitney (Oak Hill Country Club), who will compete in U.S. Open Final Qualifying, finished 1-over 73.
Brendan Hester (Pleasant Valley Country Club), the 2001 Mass Amateur champion, and Jack Tobin (Marlborough Country Club) both made an eagle and were among five golfers to shoot 74.
Over in Ipswich, Nichols College rising senior Colby Mitchell earned medalist honors with a 2-under 70, thanks in part to consecutive birdies on holes 6&7.
Damon Lusk (Meadow Brook GC) and Jack Walter (Woodland Golf Club) each shot 1-under 71, while Matt Cowgill (Granite Links GC), the runner-up in the 2017 Mass Amateur, finished even-par 72, making birdie on three of his final five holes.
