NORTON, Massachusetts – Seven Bay State junior golfers will showcase their skills this week on two national stages when USGA Championship play resume at two of the top sites in the country.
Six boys from Massachusetts will be competing in the 2018 Junior Amateur Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey while Emily Nash, of Lunenburg, will be the lone representative at the 2018 Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California. Both championships are slated for two days of stroke play beginning on Monday, July 16. Following the 36-holes in both Championship Propers, the top-64 competitors will advance to match play, beginning on July 18.
The U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will see the likes of Peter Bowie, Dillon Brown, Andrew DiPetrillo, James Imai, Michael Thorbjornsen and Mark Turner among the 156 in the field at Baltusrol while Nash is one of 156 in the U.S. Girls’ Junior field.
Turner, Bowie and DiPetrillo were part of a Mass Golf sweep in the sectional qualifier, held on June 20 at Crumpin-Fox Club in Bernardston, while Nash earned medalist honors at the same site in her sectional qualifier.
Brown – the 2017 Massachusetts Junior Amateur champion from Halifax – and the 2016 Massachusetts Junior Amateur champion, James Imai, of Brookline, each earned a spot into the 71st playing of the Championship Proper following qualifiers held in Connecticut and Michigan.
Due to his position amongst the top-400 in the WAGR, Wellesley’s Michael Thorbjorsen was exempt into the field.
