BRIDGEWATER, Massachusetts  – On the third and final day of qualifying for the 2018 Massachusetts Super Senior Amateur Championship, being contested October 2-3 at Haverhill Country Club, 17 competitors from Thursday’s qualifier, held at Olde Scotland Links in Bridgewater, earned entrance into the Championship Proper.

An additional 12 competitors who finished one spot below the final qualifying spot earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.

In what was ultimately the last Mass Golf Championship qualifier of the 2018 season, it was a pair of golfers who fired 2-under marks that made the headlines. Foxborough’s William Rockenstein, 69, and Taunton’s Gary Palmer, 65, finished as co-medalists on Thursday, topping the group of 55 competitors who attempted to advance to the October championship.

Rockenstein, who will be making his inaugural appearance in the Championship Proper, played perfect golf on the front nine of his 18-hole qualifier, making the turn at even-par 36 after nine straight made pars. Rockenstein would par the 10th hole before tallying his first of three birdies on the afternoon on the par-4 11th hole. Despite a setback on the par-4 14th hole, he would birdie two of his final three holes to remain at 2-under for the day.

Like Rockenstein, Palmer will be also making his inaugural appearance in this fall’s Super Senior Amateur Championship as 2018 marks his first eligibility. Palmer, who is also exempt into the next month’s Senior Amateur Championship after finishing amongst the top 30 in the 2017 George M. Cohen Senior Player of the Year standings, recorded two birdies on his front nine and two on his back nine, countering a pair of bogeys he carded on the par-4 10th and 15th holes, respectively.

In total, Thursday’s qualifying scores ranged from 2-under 70 to 6-over 76, and with 17 now in the field, the Championship Proper has now seen 43 competitors advance from the three qualifiers held across the Bay State between August 21 and August 30.
