MATTAPOISETT, Massachusetts – Monday marked the first day of the 2018 Sheeran Trophy, where 28 couples from across the Bay State competed in the final leg of the 2018 Team Tournament schedule – a schedule that also included the Stone Cup, the Mother & Son, Mother & Daughter, Father & Son and Father & Daughter Tournaments, respectively.

In the first round of Mass Golf’s only team tournament consisting of married couples, held at The Bay Club at Mattapoisett, the team of Bob & Temple Mitchell got off to a good start in the selected drive, alternate shot format tournament. The 18-hole event saw team Mitchell fire a 3-over par 74 while holding a two-stroke lead over the second place team of Kerry Dolan and Meg Watson.
The second day of competition, slated for Tuesday at The Bay Club, will feature another 24 couples who were not in the field Monday.
On Monday in Mattapoisett, the team of Mitchell & Mitchell, from nearby Marion, birdied their first hole in the shotgun style format where they started on the par-3 14th hole, which was playing at 180 yards. The couple also birdied the par-4 fifth hole, which played at 376 yards to pace their round, which also included 11 made pars.
If the team were to hold on to their victory, which will be dependent on the play of the 24 couples who will compete Tuesday, it would be the team’s first victory in the annual team tournament, which first began in 1959.
Earlier this season, Temple Mitchell was victorious in the annual Mother and Son Team Tournament, where she and her son Jackson, a member of the UMass Dartmouth men’s golf team, edged Nashawtuc Country Club’s MJ and Stephen Wagner in a USGA recommended match of cards after both teams shot even-par 72’s at LeBaron Hills Country Club.
The second day of the Sheeran Trophy will begin with another shotgun start beginning at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
