STONEHAM, Massachusetts – Seven days after it was originally scheduled, the fourth and now final qualifying round to the determine the 2018 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship field was held at Bear Hill Golf Course in Stoneham.
In the end, a total six competitors from a field of more than 45 claimed a spot at next month’s Championship Proper. An additional three competitors who finished one spot below the final qualifying spot, earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.
The main event – the 58th playing of the Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship – will be held on September 25-26 at Pine Brook Country Club.
Today’s qualifying round at Bear Hill GC was originally scheduled to be held earlier in the month – on August 13th – but inclement weather on that day made the course unplayable for the field of senior amateurs who traveled from parts across the state to compete. The round was then rescheduled for today, and, despite a rainy morning that resulted in a two-hour delay, the 18-hole qualifier was held successfully.
Leading the charge and earning medalist honors with a score of 1-over par 72 was Bill Kidik (Segregansett CC). After making the turn at 1-over par 37, the 59-year-old from Taunton carded three straight birdies beginning on the 12th hole and was 1-under par through 14 holes. He would play his final four holes at 3-over par, but his performance on this day was good enough to secure the top spot overall.
He finished two strokes ahead of Robert Bogart (Salem CC), and three ahead of a group of four qualifiers at 4-over par 75. Included in that group were Ken Whalley (Ferncroft CC), Richard McGovern (D.W. Field GC), Cy Kilgore (Tedesco CC), and Michael Fecteau (Ould Newbury GC).
