WESTMINSTER, Massachusetts – Following a two-hour frost delay that forced the start of the 2018 Mildred Prunaret Cup to be pushed back to 11 a.m. Monday morning, the 12 two-person teams in the field at Westminster Country Club were off and running in the annual 45- hole better-ball, match play event. The two-day event will conclude Tuesday at the same central Massachusetts course.

Due to darkness, matches were called as competitors were in the middle of their third match of the day Monday evening.

After completing their first two 9-hole matches on Monday, the team of Lynne Brilliant & Chris Fitzpatrick from Quincy’s Presidents Golf Course lead the contingent of six teams in the “A” flight with 12 1/2 points while the team of Fran Vandermeer & Kris Herman from Taconic Golf Club lead the six teams in the “B” flight with 15 total points. Each team received one point for winning each hole and ½ point for halving a hole while the winning team from each head-to-head match received a secondary point in each of their matches as points accumulated following Monday’s play.

In their first match of the day, Brilliant & Fitzpatrick defeated the tandem of Lynne Johnson & Gail Galin (Framingham CC), 5&4, in their nine hole match and received six points to their team total. After beginning play on the 15th hole, where Brilliant & Fitzpatrick quickly went 1-up in their match, the duo halved the next two holes before winning their final two holes in the match.

In their second match of the day, Brilliant & Fitzpatrick bested the team of Valerie Casella & Sally DeGan (Sagamore Spring GC), 6 1/2 – 3 1/2 to extend their point total to 12 1/2 for the day. In their second match, contested on Westminster’s front nine compared to the earlier match on the back nine, the victors halved their first hole, won their second and third holes over their opponents while then adding to their leads with wins on both the seventh and ninth holes of competition.

Following two rounds, they lead the team of Lynne Johnson and Gail Galin by 1 1/2 points.

In the ‘B” flight contest, the Taconic Golf Club team of Fran Vandermeer & Kris Herman bested the field with 15 total points between their two completed matches. They first took down the likes of Erika Allen (Beverly G&TC) & Christine Winfrey (Ipswich CC) in their first match by a score of 7-3 before posting an 8-2 victory in their second match Monday afternoon. The second match was against the team of Linda Goulet & Gigi Wallace, both of whom play out of Quincy’s Presidents Golf Course.

While all competitors began their final matches of the day before play was suspended, point totals from the third match won’t be posted until the remainder of their rounds are completed on Tuesday morning. Tuesday will also feature both fourth and fifth matches as well.
