2-over par 74 was the magic number on Monday as the likes of Eric Tidman (Worcester CC) and John McNeill (BAGS) split medalist honors to lead the group of 14 qualifiers into the Championship next month.

The former Babson College golfer Tidman, 29, tallied three birdies to three bogeys and a double through off and on wet conditions to earn a share of the lead and a return to his second Mid-Amateur Championship in three years. Joining him as co-medalist is John McNeill, of Stow, who carded two birdies to four bogeys to finish two strokes above par.

McNeill’s entrance into the Championship Proper comes on the heels of a berth into the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship and a T8 finish at the state’s Amateur Public Links Championship two weeks ago.

In addition to Tidman and McNeill, the qualifying scores for the 12 additional competitors ranged from 3-over 75 to 6-over 78.
