HYANNIS, Massachusetts – For the first time since 1997, a quartet from Thorny Lea Golf Club has claimed the top prize at the 2018 Dolly Sullivan, an annual two-day tournament which features teams of four from Mass Golf Member Clubs which compete for top gross and net division titles. This year’s event was held at Hyannis Golf Course.
Capturing the gross division title with a score of 11-under par 61 was the team from Thorny Lea GC that was made up of Laura Jean Mann, Shannon Johnson, Lorraine Feeney and Megan Buck. They finished four strokes ahead of the second-place team from Bedrock Golf Club which included Christine Gagner, Kris Henderson, Mary Gale and Rita Bedard.
Rounding out the top three in the gross division was the Charles River Country Club team of Pam Kuong, Sue Curtin, Mary Clark and Mary Lou Bohn.

This annual team event was introduced in 1982 in honor of Dolly Sullivan, who was the niece of American golf legend Francis Ouimet. Sullivan served as golf coach at nearby Milton Academy for 32 years. The event has not only become a must-play for teams from across the state, but it also raises important funds for the WGAM/Dolly Sullivan Junior Scholarship Program.
“We could not be happier with the participation and performance from all of our teams,” said Cathleen Beach, Mass Golf’s Director of Women’s Events & Player Development. “The support that all of these women show for this event and the scholarship fund is admirable and we could not be happier to continue such a wonderful tradition.”
Also being recognized by having their names engraved on the Dolly Sullivan Plaques was the team from William J. Devine Golf Course – Joy Malchodi, Vivian Meranda, Susan Sullivan and Gloria Spitalny. That quartet finished with a score of 18-under par 54 to edge the team from Woodland Golf Club – Maura Brown, Liz Gett, Holly Bruce, and Mary English – by just one stroke.
The tournament, which began on Tuesday, August 21 before its completion on Wednesday, August 22, featured a total of 63 teams in the field and final overall gross scores ranged from 61 to 93.
