SALEM, Massachusetts – On the third day of qualifying for the 2018 Massachusetts Open Championship, being contested from June 11-13 at Great Horse in Hampden, 12 competitors at Monday’s Kernwood Country Club qualifying site earned entrance into the Championship Proper.
Celebrating its 109th year, the Championship remains the only Mass Golf event of the year with a professional purse. An additional eight competitors, who finished at 3-over par 73, earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.
Finishing as medalist with a score of 3-under par 67 was former University of Florida standout turned professional golfer Michael Furci of Sayville, New York. Furci, who will be making his Massachusetts Open Championship debut next month, began his round on Monday on the 8th hole and was even par through his first five holes. Beginning with a birdie made on the 525-yard, par 5 15th hole, Furci would go on to play his final 13 holes at 3-under par to secure his spot at the Championship Proper.
The only other players in the field to finish under par were Austin Nowak (Lancaster, NY) and Matt Adams (Presidents GC), who both finished at 1-under par 69 for a share of second place overall.
Five of the 12 qualifiers from Kernwood CC were amateurs, including Max Emmerich, a 19 year old member of Kernwood who just completed his freshman season at McDaniel College in Maryland.
