CHATHAM, Massachusetts – On the fourth day of qualifying for the 2018 Massachusetts Open Championship, being contested from June 11-13 at Great Horse in Hampden, 14 competitors at Wednesday’s Eastward Ho! Country Club qualifying site earned entrance into the Championship Proper.
Celebrating its 109th year, the Championship remains the only Mass Golf event of the year with a professional purse. An additional seven competitors, who shot a 4-over 75, earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.
Traveling professionals Ryan Gendron (Tampa, Florida) and Jonathan Pannone (East Greenwich, R.I.) joined local amateur Alex Stimpson (Woods Hole GC) as co-medalists, each shooting 1-under par 70 at Chatham’s Eastward Ho! Country Club Wednesday. Both Gendron and Stimpson tallied five birdies to counter their four bogeys while Pannone rebounded from a first-hole bogey by making birdie on the 2nd, 12th and 13th holes en route to their spots atop the leaderboard and into the Championship Proper.
Local amateurs Joe Brosseau (Springfield CC), Andrew Roy (Granite Links GC) Joey Ciolino (Marlborough CC), Curtis Merritt (Falmouth CC), Michael Arter (Crestwood CC) and Pat Pio III (Longmeadow CC) were amongst the competitors who qualified Wednesday, joining Bay State professional Eri Sequin (Vineyard GC) and four out-of-state professionals to qualify for the 2018 State Open.
