MELROSE, Massachusetts – Dracut’s Wayne Burgess (Long Meadow GC) made birdie twice on the front nine and carded a 6-over 76 to lead 18 players advancing to Super Senior Amateur Championship through Monday’s qualifying event at Bellevue Golf Club. With the first tee times taking place at noon, players had to battle mid-day heat, with temperatures above 95 degrees.
The final qualifier will take place tomorrow (Tuesday) at Chicopee Country Club.

The 7th Massachusetts Super Senior Amateur Championship will begin September 2 with the stroke play competition taking place at Blissful Meadows GC in Uxbridge. The Championship Proper will consist of two days of stroke play, with only the low 70 scorers and ties moving on to the second day.
The Championship is open to amateur golfers who have reached their 65th birthday and have a handicap not exceeding 12.0. Only seven of the 18 qualifiers broke 10-over 80 at Monday’s qualifier.
Burgess, 65, made birdie on the 496-yard, par-5 sixth hole and finished the front nine with another on the 334-yard, par-4 ninth. Peter Harrison (Vesper CC) finished one stroke back as he shot an even-par 35 on the front nine, carding a birdie on the 403-yard, par-4 third hole.
Burgess’ younger brother, Charles Burgess (Long Meadow GC), 69, also qualified by shooting 11-over. Twin brothers Pat Scanlan and Jim Scanlan, both of Wenham CC, shot 8-over and 9-over, respectively. Pat won the Hornblower Memorial Senior Division in 2017.
Peter Brumme (Nashawtuc CC), the winner of the inaugural Super Senior Amateur in 2014, also qualified by tying five others at the cutline of 12-over. He made par on the last two holes to stay at 12-over.
