SANDWICH, Massachusetts – For the first time in its history, the Fall Cup Championship will be shared between two clubs. TPC Boston was a winner for the second consecutive year and a record fourth time overall, but they ended up in a tie with Sagamore Spring Golf Club.
Both teams finished with a gross aggregate score of 17-over while battling driving rain and gusty conditions at The Ridge Club to rise above the 20 teams in the field. The Captains Golf Course #2 squad won the net title with at 8-under. Due to rainy conditions, not all teams completed 18 holes, therefore scores were based on the first nine holes played.

The Fall Cup competition is a statewide tournament that featured three matches in September. Teams of six females from each club were broken into 20, 4-team regional divisions, creating matchups between Mass Golf Member Clubs. The top team from each region following those three matches earned the right to compete in Wednesday’s Fall Cup Championship.
“We’ve had a great Fall Cup match season,” said Naomi Nessenoff, Mass Golf’s Manager of Women’s Events & Player Development. “We’ve had three full matches we had some beautiful weather those three days, and the dedication of the players to come out today on a windy and rainy day was amazing. We had had 120 women participating from all around the state today, and they are excited to be here; so much excitement at the first tee.”
The championship format was four-ball stroke play gross and net, with the total score for each team of six determined by the aggregate total of its three pairs.
Sagamore Spring GC, located in Lynnfield, earned its first team championship in the history of an event. Connie Hayton & Terry Durkin set the pace at 2-over through nine holes, including six straight pars from Hayton to start their round. Also, Gina Gallagher & Donna DiIeso shot 4-over, while Janet Kim & Alice McElhinney rounded out the team with an 11-over.
TPC Boston’s Leslie Logan and Tina Newman led their team with a 4-over gross score through nine holes. Logan made birdie on the first hole and followed up with a pair of pars. Newman made par on the 7th to end a three-hole skid of pars.
Sue Mackey & AnneMarie Freitas and Michelle Ouellette & Annie McGuire rounded out the TPC Boston’s squad by shooting 6-over and 7-over, respectively.
Logan said her team was appreciative just to make it to the championship event. During week three of the matches, TPC Boston entered their final regular season match leading their division by just one-half point but won by five to advance to The Ridge Club.
All three pairs from The Captains shot under-par net scores, with Linda Nichols & Reggie McIntosh going 4-under. Both Sarah Robinson & Janet Baxter and Peggy Jablonski & Paige Ferraguto were 2-under for their net scores. The Captains squad finished third overall in the gross with a score of 19-over.
