SUTTON, Massachusetts – On the sixth and final day of qualifying for the Massachusetts Open Championship, being contested at Vesper Country Club from June 10-12, New Jersey native and former Cornell University golfer Mike Graboyes shot a day-best 4-under 68 to earn medalist honors at Pleasant Valley Country Club and a spot in this year’s Championship Proper. Graboyes and Hal Jacobs, of The Haven Country Club, were the only two of the 15 total competitors who advanced from Tuesday’s qualifiers to shoot under par. Qualifying scores ranged from Graboyes’ 68 to 3-over 75.

With a 10th tee start, Graboyes jumped to a quick start, tallying back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th holes as well as the 15th and 16th holes to make the turn at an impressive 4-under 32, and despite falling three strokes with a double and a bogey to begin his second nine, he registered three straight birdies on Holes 3-5 to move back to 4-under before making on each of final four holes.
Five of Tuesday’s 15 qualifiers were amateur competitors while 10 of the 15 qualifiers listed their residency in Massachusetts.
Celebrating its 110th year in 2019, the Championship remains the only Mass Golf event of the year with a professional purse. Six others earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.
