NORTON, Massachusetts – In preparation of the busy Mass Golf season, Mass Golf has added several new staff members to its itinerary for the summer to help ensure the entirety of Mass Golf Championships, Tournaments, Member Days and other services can be executed to the highest level. While some additions have been on staff since the season kicked into high gear in early May, others have been added in the weeks since to ensure all needs of the association are met. Currently, there are 24 employees on the staff directory who will serve in their respective roles, including six USGA P.J. Boatwright interns, as well as Matthew Griffith, who joins the staff as Mass Golf’s new Member Day Coordinator.

The newest member of the Mass Golf Member Services team, Matthew Griffith comes with an extensive background in the golf profession. Matt has been a PGA Professional for 15 years and has 22 years of experience in the golf industry. He was most recently the Head Golf Professional at Whitinsville Golf Club for five years.

Assisting with both tournaments and championships, Jack Sharrio is one of six USGA P.J. Boatwright interns and is currently enrolled at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut where he studies History. In addition to his passion for golf, Jack is a member of the men’s lacrosse team and is scheduled to graduate later this year. Sharrio is a native of Marblehead, Massachusetts.

A P.J. Boatwright intern in the Member Services Department until the end of the summer, Devin Nealon is a rising senior at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. Devin is a Management and Marketing Double Major. Originally from Medway, Massachusetts, where he attended Medway High School and played varsity golf for three years, Devin will be assisting in the operations of all member day events in addition to other needs of the department.

Making her return to the Mass Golf offices for her second year, Norton native Abby O’Leary is joining the Mass Golf team for the summer as the Receptionist at our Headquarters. There, she is responsible for several of the daily operations around Golf House in addition to her work directing phone calls and messages for all patrons of the Mass Golf building, including the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, The Northern Trust PGA Championship team, Golf Fights Cancer, the New England Golf Association, the Golf Courses Superintendents Association of New England, The New England Golf Course Owners Association and the New England Club Managers Association. Abby is entering her sophomore year at Endicott College, where she studies interior design.

One of two interns in one of the newest programs offered by the USGA, KT joins the Mass Golf team as its Leadership and Development intern, where he’ll assist members of all departments over the next 18-months as he looks to expand his expertise in golf administration. Originally from Albertville, Minnesota, he attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he received a degree in Marketing this past spring. Phanthavong is one of two interns across the United States serving as a Boatwright Leadership and Development intern, with the other position serving in the Northern California Golf Association offices.

One of our three-month interns, Nolan Reilly is the summer communications intern at Mass Golf. Looking to build on his interest in journalism, which he is studying at the University of Rhode Island, Reilly’s role includes a wide variety of content creation for both traditional and new media platforms, and many of the video work produced by the Mass Golf communications department has been created by Reilly himself. A native of Whitinsville, Nolan was a four-year member of the varsity golf team at Northbridge High School.

After serving in a six month role one year ago, Steven Yatrousis returns to Mass Golf this summer in a nine month position within the Mass Golf Championship Department. A native of Wethersfield, Connecticut, Steven will be on site for several Mass Golf qualifying and championship events throughout his second year as a P.J. Boatwright intern. He received his college degree from the University of Connecticut, where he majored in Economics.

A year after serving as the communications intern for Mass Golf, Andrew Longo expands his role for the 2019 season as a sixth month intern with the New England Golf Association, where he’ll assist NEGA Manager of Operations and USGA Qualifying, Greg Howell. In addition to his expansion of his communications role, he will assist in operations and set up for nearly 20 USGA qualifiers being held in the Bay State as well as the NEGA’s three Championship Propers and accompanying qualifiers. Andrew received his Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a Sports Studies minor from Saint Anselm’s College in Manchester, New Hampshire this past spring. He is originally from Hingham.
USGA P.J. Boatwright Internships
Many of these positions can be filled because of the USGA P.J. Boatwright Internship program. In 2018 alone, the program assisted in filling 121 full time positions for interns across 59 different allied golf organizations. The program was originally started in 1991 and is designed to allow individuals with an interest in golf administration to learn more about a prospective career. The program is also built to help state and regional golf associations in promoting amateur golf on a short-term, entry level basis. Mass Golf currently employs six Boatwright interns.
