CANTON, Massachusetts – On a beautiful Monday morning at The Milton-Hoosic Club in Canton, all eyes were on the team of Christine Casagrande (Northampton CC) and Anna Casagrande (Northampton CC), who fired a 6-over 79 to lead all competitors in the field at the annual playing of the Mass Golf Mother & Daughter/Member & Junior Tournament. Anna, coming off her freshmen year at Southern New Hampshire University, who put her first year of college golf experience into use, teamed with her mother to take the top division.
The mother-daughter duo, of Pelham, Mass., took home their first Mother & Daughter division title, as the two combined to shoot a 6-over 79 in 18-holes. Both play out of Northampton Country Club.
After starting the day with three birdies and one bogey through the first six holes, the pair was countered by a bogey and triple-bogey on the front nine. Once making the turn, the Casagrande’s had four bogies but were able to turn it around with four pars to end the day.
The common theme of the tournament was the tough par-4 8th hole, which the field averaged a score higher than double bogey. For the Casagrande’s, effective team work and their ability to start and finish the tournament strong, was the difference maker.
With their 6-over 79 performance, the team was able to best the 6 teams in the field, including a 4 stroke margin of victory over the second place team of Maureen & Kelly Sullivan.
SECOND DIVISION, THIRD DIVISION & NINE HOLE DIVISION
For the second year in a row, the Welch & Adams family of Winchester, took home the Division II and Division III titles, respectively. Mother Tracy Welch and her daughter Mandy Adams captured the Mother & Daughter nine-hole title, shooting a 1-over 37 on the front nine on their victory, including a birdie-birdie finish on the final two holes. Their score of 37 gave them a 12-stroke margin of victory over the second place team.
Once again, this family duo was able to capture another title later on in the day. Playing with her older daughter Torey Adams, the Welch/Adams duo was crowned winners of the 18-Hole Division Flight 2 with a score of 81. The front nine began with a slow start, but after a birdie before they made the turn the pair had five pars to finish the day strong.
Additionally, Terry Wappel (Foxborough CC) and Fiona Zimmer (MIAA) duo took the top spot in the Member & Junior Division for the second year in a row.
