Headline: Women's Golf Association of Massachusetts (WGAM) Announces Falmouth's Hannah Ghelfi as the 2017 Player of the Year

Norton, Mass. – With all 2017 local and national championships now complete, the Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts is proud to formally announce that Hannah Ghelfi, a resident of Falmouth and a member of Pocasset Golf Club, as the recipient of the 2017 Anne Marie Tobin WGAM Player of the Year Award. The announcement was made by WGAM Executive Director Cathleen Beach earlier this week.
“On behalf of the entire WGAM Board of Directors, Committee members, staff and volunteers, we are pleased to formally announce that based on her tremendous performance throughout the entire season, Hannah Ghelfi has been named the 2017 Anne Marie Tobin WGAM Player of the Year, officially recognizing her as the Bay State’s top amateur female golfer,” said Beach. “Hannah’s accomplishments in several tournaments this summer are the result of her tireless hours of practice and hard work throughout the entire year and the final player of the year standings reflect her dedication to our sport.”
Ghelfi, a sophomore on the University of Michigan Women’s Golf Team, amassed 835 WGAM Player of the Year points, a margin of more than 100 points over the next highest player in the standings for her first career WGAM Player of the Year nod. In its 24th year of recognition, Ghelfi becomes only the 13th individual to receive the Anne Marie Tobin WGAM Player of the Year award and at only 20 years of age, she also becomes one of the youngest to ever receive the award.
Highlighted by a come-from-behind victory over Agawam resident and junior star Angela Garvin in the 114th Massachusetts Women’s Amateur Championship, held at Myopia Hunt Club in early August, Ghelfi also earned a pair of second place finishes in the WGAM Amateur qualifier and the New England Women’s Golf Association Amateur Championship. A sixth place finish in the Edith Noblit Baker Trophy held at Woods Hole Golf Club rounded out her scoring in this year’s WGAM standings.
On her notification as the 2017 Anne Marie Tobin WGAM Player of the Year, Ghelfi said,
“I am honored to win the WGAM player of the year award, especially considering the amount of talented women golfers that we have in Massachusetts and the number of great women who have won this award before me. The WGAM has done so much for me in my development as a player and as a person and I am proud to represent them.”
Ghelfi will be among those honored at the 2018 Massachusetts Golf Association’s Salute to Champions Dinner, being held Thursday, January 4 at Wellesley Country Club. In addition to honoring the Bay State’s top amateur golfers from the 2017 season, the Salute to Champions Dinner will be the first event following the MGA/WGAM merger that will become official on January 1, 2018.
