The six-day competition will see all 156 in the field participate in the 36-hole stroke play portion of the event August 26-27 before the field is cut down to the top-64 for the match play portion of play, which will begin Monday, August 28.
Frank Vana (Boxford), Jack Kearney (East Longmeadow), Ronald LaVerdiere (Amherst), Mike Arter (Lakeville) and Brian Secia (Nantucket) make up the contingent of Massachusetts natives in the field who hope to advance to match play and fulfill their dream of becoming a USGA Champion.
On August 1, Vana, who will be making his U.S. Senior Amateur Championship debut after turning 55 earlier this week, shot a 6-under par 65 to earn medalist honors at Charter Oak Country Club while LaVerdiere, Arter and Secia all finished amongst the top-5 and qualified with Vana.
Kearney, a longtime member of Elmcrest Country Club who splits his residence with Massachusetts and Peachtree City (GA), needed a 4-hole playoff to lock up the final spot at Manchester Country Club (VT) on the same day.
“The U.S. Senior Amateur Championship is one of the top Championships on the competitive schedule each year and qualifying for such an event is a result of true dedication to the game,” said MGA Executive Director Jesse Menachem. “We want to wish all five of the competitors from Massachusetts, all of whom have become regulars in our many MGA events each year, the best of luck as they head west to compete.”
