Taunton, MA — Just last week, the Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts (WGAM) wrapped up the 2017 playing of the Dolly Sullivan Tournament, held this year at Taunton’s Segregansett Country Club, where the four-player squad from Charles River Country Club was once again victorious.
The Charles River Country Club team of Jackie Gonzalez, Pam Kuong, Mary Lou Bohn and Jessica Hughes carded a team-best 68 to defeat the team from Nashawtuc Country Club for their 10th Dolly Sullivan Tournament title since 1994 and the third victory in four years for the Newton Centre club, which will be hosting the 109th playing of the Massachusetts Amateur Championship next month.
Competing for Nashawtuc in the annual best ball of team(s) four style tournament were MJ Wagner, Colleen McPherson, Cindy Pereira and Inga Devenis. The format of the tournament allows teams to be formed by members of the same club and all participants play at 90% handicap.
“This year’s Dolly Sullivan Tournament was another fantastic WGAM event” said Cathleen Beach, the WGAM's Executive Director. “Each club represented in the tournament was very competitive and that made this year’s event both successful and memorable. We thank the Segregansett Country Club staff for their efforts in making this another great WGAM event.”
The tournament, which began on Monday, June 12 before its completion on June 19, featured a total of 68 teams from 58 clubs in the field and final overall gross scores ranged from 68 to 96.

It started in 1982 to honor the memory of Dolly Sullivan, the niece of American golf legend Francis Ouimet. Sullivan served as golf coach at nearby Milton Academy for 32 years.
For the Charles River team, both Kuong and Bohn were members on both the 2016 and 2014 Dolly Sullivan winning teams while Monday’s victory marked the first title for both Gonzalez and Hughes. Kuong was also part of the winning Charles River teams in 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2008.
Gonzalez, of West Roxbury, just completed her freshman year as a member of the Women’s Golf Team at Holy Cross and was named the 2017 Patriot League Co-Rookie of the Year.
Hughes, a Dartmouth graduate who captained the Big Green, is the defending 2016 Lowell City Golf Tournament Women’s Champion.
Kuong was the runner up at the 2015 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship. She and Bohn are longtime friends and Bohn served as caddy for Kohn and fellow Charles River member Susan Curtin at this past year’s U,S. Women’s Four Ball Championship. Curtin has also won multiple Dolly Sullivan tournament titles for Charles River.
The Dolly Sullivan Tournament, which began in 1982, raises key funds for the WGAM Jr. Scholarship Fund, Inc. and the Ouimet Fund’s WGAM/Dolly Sullivan Scholarship.
In addition to Charles River Country Club and Nashawtuc Country Club, Oakley CC (73), Brookmeadow CC (75) and Greenhills Municipal GC (76) rounded out the top-five on the leaderboard.
