Headline: Local Golf Community Comes Together on December 3rd to Support George Wright GC's Joe Leary As He Battles Lung Cancer

Boston, MA — For anyone who has participated in a golf event, there is no doubt that each day features more than just the competition.

Often, those events serve as a calming respite where friends catch up with each other and enjoy each other’s company, much like a family. And like a family, when one individual is going through difficult times, others come together in an effort to make things better.

On Saturday, December 3rd the local golf community will come together at George Wright Golf Club in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood for a fundraiser to help Joe Leary, the Golf Operations Manager at George Wright who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer.

“I call Joe the mini-mayor. He knows everyone who comes through the door and remembers their names,” said Scott Allen, George Wright's PGA Head Golf Professional. “Everybody knows Joe and he is one of those guys who treats everyone well. He is one of those people who people look forward to seeing when they walk through the doors at George Wright.”

Leary, who turns 56 in December, has been at George Wright for more than 10 years over two stints. Between those two stints, he also worked for the Department of Conservation and Recreation in the state’s reconstruction of Ponkapoag Golf Course in Canton.

Joe, and his wife, Margie, of Dorchester have two young daughters and the fundraiser will help offset the costs while he receives treatment.

The $25 per person donation at the door includes appetizers and buffet-style dinner with light entertainment. A corn-hole tournament and live auction are also set to take place with all proceeds going to Joe and his family.
