At Veterans Memorial Golf Course, Robert Linn (Berkshire Hills CC) and David Laravee (Ludlow CC) each shot 1-over par 73 and combined for seven birdies and 22 made pars to lead the final group of players who advanced to the two-day Championship being held at The Golf Club at Turner Hill in Ipswich on September 12 and 13.
Linn opened up play with two birdies in his first three holes and tallied three on the back nine for the share of his lead spot. Laravee on the otherhand registered two bogeys in the first five holes, but rebounded by sinking his first of two birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 1-over par 37. A bogey and second birdie cancelled out any changes on the back nine as his status remained unchanged in the second half of play.
Three players shot 3-over par 73 to enter a three-way tie for third. Michael Mertes (Wyckoff CC), David Johnson (Shaker Farms)and Julio Baranano (Cape Cod CC) all advanced to the Championship Proper while the final spot was given to Ken Ross, Jr. (Francona GC), who qualified with a mark of 4-over 76.
Keith Albano (GreatHorse) finished his round of 18 by carding a 5-over 77 for the lone alternate spot. He will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the MGA Policies & Procedures page.
Entries are open to amateur golfers who hold membership in an MGA member club, who have reached their 55th birthday by September 12, 2016 and have an up-to-date MGA/USGA GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 8.0 (as determined by the July 1, 2016 Handicap Revision) or have completed their handicap certification.
