Ipswich, MA — As the 108th playing of the Massachusetts Amateur Championship continues to near, so does the final list of all the participants who will be able to play for the title of the Bay State’s top amateur golfer when the tournament heads to Taconic Golf Club the week of July 11-15.
On Thursday, 12 more names were added to that list at Ipswich Country Club, where the second to last MGA Amateur qualifier took place.
Leading the field of qualifiers Thursday was Matt Cowgill (Wayland CC). His score of 1-under par 71 led all 58 golfers who were competing for qualifying spots. Cowgill rebounded from bogey and double bogey on the first two holes by registering birdies on two of the next four holes and finishing with a total of five on the afternoon. He also made par on 10 holes.
Second place went to the home course as Ipswich’s John Hugo shot an even-par 72 by making four birdies on the back nine, including a period of three straight 1-under par shots to clinch his spot.
John Gilmartin (Indian Ridge CC) rounded out the top three scorers, shooting 1-over par 73. A pair of players tied for fourth place and fifth place, respectively, with scores of 2-over par and 3-over par. Five additional players shot 4-over par 76 to complete the round of golfers who will be competing out in Williamstown next month.
The final Massachusetts Amateur qualifier will be held on Tuesday June 21 at Country Club of Wilbraham. There, 48 golfers will look to be among the seven qualifiers and ties to advance to the MGA Amateur Championship.
