Headline: 12 More Competitors Punch Ticket to Massachusetts Amateur Championship; The 8th of 10 Qualifiers Was Held on June 9 at Haverhill Country Club

Haverhill CC hosted an MGA Amateur Qualifier on June 9.

Haverhill, MA — On the third to last day of Massachusetts Amateur Championship qualifying, a total fo 12 competitors battled strong winds and colder-than-normal temperatures to make the cut for the Commonwealth’s top amateur championship, being played at Taconic Golf Club the week of July 11.

Already with 68 players on the docket for Williamstown next month, Haverhill Country Club provided Thursday’s competitors - many of whom hailed from Northshore-area clubs - the opportunity to compete for the title of the amateur champion.

Despite the strong local representation, one of the top finishers traveled more than 60 miles to compete in the qualifying round in Haverhill. Matthew Leger (Oak Hill CC) was one of three to lead the way by posting a score of 3-over par 73. Last summer, Leger competed in the 2015 MGA Amateur Championship when it was held at his home course in Fitchburg. On this day, Leger carded a pair of birdies on the 13th and 14th holes to allow him to secure a share of medalist honors.

He was joined at the top of Thursday’s leaderboard by Kurt Flionis (Lexington GC), who entered the 361-yard, par-4 18th hole one stroke back before making his second of two birdies on the afternoon to take a share of the lead. Cy Kilgore (Tedesco CC) recorded one birdie on each side of the course to round out the leaderboard.

Additionally, a quartet of Haverhill CC members - Will Grady, Mac Cavenaugh, Gregory Poor and Nick Schena - were among the seven who posted scores of 4-over par-74. They finished T4. Two others placed for 11th with scores of 5-over par 75 to squeeze ahead of the cut for next month’s tournament.    

Following next week's Massachusetts Open Championship (set for Worcester Country Club on June 13-15), the final two Massachusetts Amateur qualifiers will be held on June 16 (Ipswich) and June 21 (CC of Wilbraham).
