Norton, MA — On Monday, eight golfers at CC of Pittsfield, and an additional 11 from Wianno Club, qualified for the 108th playing of the Massachusetts Amateur Championship, to be held at Taconic Golf Club on July 11-15.
Monday marked the fourth and fifth qualifier events of the 10 scheduled throughout the Bay State for those competing for a spot in the state’s top amateur championship of the year.
In Pittsfield, James Elliot (Crumpin-Fox Club) made birdie on his final three holes to finish with a score of even par 70. He finished one stroke ahead of the second place finisher, Jake Mahoney (Greenock GC). Two golfers finished T3 and another four shot 3-over par 74 to conclude the action at the Berkshire County course.
At Wianno, the attention was focused on Tommy Parker (Thorny Lea GC), who fired a 1-over par 71 to lead the field. His performance was highlighted by a pair of eagles on the back nine that ultimately was the difference maker on the afternoon.
On the 458-yard, par-5 12th hole, Parker carded a three-stroke mark. Four holes later, he found the hole in two on the 402-yard, par-4 16th hole before making par on each of the final two holes to round out his afternoon. Parker finished tied for first with Nick Drago (Plymouth CC), who recorded four birdies to claim a share of the lead. The two competitors led the field of 11 golfers at Wianno whose scores ranged from 1-over par 71 to 5-over par 75.
Additionally, five players at each site were named alternatives under the MGA Alternate Policy.
MGA qualifying events will continue at both the Bay Club of Mattapoisett and Glen Ellen GC on Tuesday as the playing field for the Massachusetts Amateur Championship continues to take shape.
The tee times for both venues are scheduled to begin at 7:30 am.
