Hingham, MA —Team Massachusetts was victorious at the 2016 Griscom Cup, netting a team score of 54.5 points to secure the win over the fellow competitors from the Women's Golf Association of Philadelphia and the Metropolitan Golf Association (New York) at Boston Golf Club on Thursday.
For the Bay State crew, this marks the first Griscom Cup victory since the squad won back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009.
An annual competition dating back to 1898, the Griscom Cup sees each association competing with a team of its eight best golfers and an alternate who compete in a three-way, Nassau style match-play.
On the first day, the matches are a team (foursomes) format and on the second day, the players compete in singles matches.
The scores from the two days of competition were combined to determine the winner. Massachusetts recorded 17.5 points in the team format in day one of competition and followed suit with a team-high 37 points in singles play to earn the victory with its 54.5 points, the most points scored by a single team in the modern-era of the Griscom Cup.
For team captain Chelsea Curtis, a South Boston resident who holds her handicap at William J. Devine GC at Franklin Park, bringing the Cup back to Massachusetts was a great experience, stating,
"It's a great feeling to host the tournament and win the tournament in the same year," said Curtis, who also served as captain for Team Massachusetts, which finished fourth at the 2015 USGA Women’s State Team Championship.
She added that team spirit and camaraderie were two of the keys to victory on the Gil Hanse course.
After the team met its expectations by totaling its 17.5 points in the first day of competition, four of the team's eight players swept their competition, each recording the individual maximum of six points. A feat Curtis said was simply, "phenomenal."
In addition to Curtis, Team Massachusetts consisted of Katie Barrand, Susan Curtin, Sophie DiPetrillo, Jacquelyn Eleey, Shannon Johnson, Tara Joy-Connelly, Pamela Kuong, Mary Mulcahy & Claire Sheldon.
