NORTON, Massachusetts – The first USGA event of the year will have a Mass Golf representative as Shannon Johnson, of North Easton and Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton, will be among 132 players competing in the 120th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Maryland’s Woodmont Country Club. Play begins Monday, August 3 and will end Sunday, August 9 with the Championship match.
UPDATE: On Monday, Johnson’s tee time was moved to 1 p.m. She is scheduled to tee off Tuesday at 8 a.m.

Johnson, 37, will be making her fourth appearance in the U.S. Women’s Amateur, which marks her 17th appearance in a USGA event. Though qualifying for all USGA events was canceled this year due to COVID-19, Johnson earned a spot in the exempt-only field through her victory in the 2018 U.S. Women’s Mid Amateur Championship.
“Competing in USGA events is always a highlight in my playing schedule,” said Johnson, a sales representative for PING. “With all the different precautions they will be taking, it won’t be like events in the past, but the golf itself will always be the same. It will be fun to get out there on Monday and see how my game stacks up against some of the best players in the country.”
So far this year, Johnson won Mass Golf’s Women’s Four-Ball Championship for the Townshend Cup with Megan Buck (Thorny Lea GC) and finished runner-up in the New England Women’s Amateur Championship, an event she won in 2018 and 2019.
After the U.S. Women’s Amateur, the U.S. Amateur Championship will take place August 10-16, with the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open scheduled for later this year.
