STOW, Massachusetts (October 7, 2024) – On a cold, rain-soaked Monday at Wedgewood Pines Country Club, the team of six women from Acushnet River Valley weathered the storm to earn the 2024 Mass Golf Fall Cup Championship gross title. Sporting matching zip-ups with a science blue complexion — a color representing loyalty, strength, wisdom and trust — the six-player squad carried all those qualities to win their region and collect their second-ever team title in the event.
Acushnet River Valley won by seven strokes over the runner-up squad from The Captains Golf Course, meanwhile Wollaston Golf Club took home First Net honors, with Needham Golf Club finishing second via a tiebreaker (scorecard match).

Established in 2009, the Fall Cup competition is a statewide tournament that featured three matches in September. Teams of six women from each club were broken into 4-team regional divisions, creating matchups between Mass Golf Member Clubs. In total, 18 teams from the various regions following those three matches earned the right to compete in Monday’s Fall Cup Championship.
The championship format is four-ball stroke play gross and net, with the total score for each team determined by the aggregate total of its three pairings. At the end of each hole, the two-person team used the best person’s score on that hole (gross) and the best-handicapped score on that hole (net). Partners were paired by handicap index, low to high.
Following a third-place finish last year, Patti Tanaka & Denise Belanger set the pace for the winning squad from Acushnet, shooting 7-over-par 78, to match the lowest score among the duos in the field (also Needham’s Laura Sisk & Alexandra Clark). Belanger made birdie on the par-5 3rd, and the squad made par on 10 other holes. Sharon Woodward & Kristine Sethares added a pair of birdies to shoot 81 as a squad, while Suzanne Rebeiro & Christine Torpey finished the round with a birdie on the par-5 18th to shoot 84.
Kathleen Oelschlager & Linda Nichols shot 81 to lead the Captains squads whose remaining two teams finished with and 84 and 85.
As for the Wollaston squad, Christine DeWolfe & Margaret Butteriss shot 1-under net score, taking advantage of the par-3s in particular. They also got strong performances from Ailish Edwards & Julie Lorigan and Becky King & Catherine O’Toole.
