The final three qualifying events for the Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championships took place this week at Cape Cod Country Club, Westover Golf Club and Gardner Municipal Golf Club. While several players qualified at the first two sites, play at Gardner on Thursday was suspended until Friday morning.
The Mid-Amateur will take place September 3-5 at Cranberry Valley Golf Course in Harwich, one of Cape Cod’s many public course. The event is open to all amateur golfers (age 25+ as of Sept. 3, 2024) who have an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 4.0 (at the time of registration).

At Cape Cod Country Club, 18 players advanced to the championship including Evan Loxley (USGA/Mass Golf), Hunter Smith (Duxbury Yacht Club), and Kyle Buschmann (Granite Links Golf Club), who all shot the best scores of the day at 1-under-par 70. Loxley, a former Wareham High School golf standout, made birdie on the 18th to stake a share of the top score. Smith, meanwhile, qualified in his first year eligible. Mike Boldy (Royal Northern Golf Society) made a pair of late birdies to finish even-par.
Other Cape Cod qualifiers who shot 72 included Mike Walker (Cape Cod National), Falmouth Country Club’s Ryan Gendron, Quashney Valley’s Brad Costa, and Oyster Harbors’ Brian Bassett. Michael Giardino (Cummaquid Golf Club) and Michael Cox (Atlantic Country Club) made birdie on the 18th to qualify on the number with a 73.
At Westover Golf Course, 14 players earned a guaranteed spot with again three players finishing atop the leaderboard. Dan Fanion (Springfield Country Club) shot 1-under 71 to match Mike Rattigan (Salem Country Club) and Jonathan Jones (The Milton-Hoosic Club).
Westover member Shawn Lebeau qualified on the number with a 73, as did Adam Brickle (Country Club of Pittsfield), Jonny Burgin (Granite Links Golf Club), and Joseph Lafleur (Ludlow Country Club), who made birdie on the final hole to qualify.
At Gardner Municipal Golf Club, 12 players made the cut and will advance to the championship. Brett Krekorian (Indian Ridge Country Club) was the solo leader, shooting 6-under (65). Three players, Lorenzo Ciccone (Gardner Municipal Golf Club), Municipal Golf Club (Haverhill Golf & Country Club), and Patrick Sullivan (Marlborough Country Club) shot 67 (-4) which was 2 strokes better than the next few players on the leaderboard.
