25 Advance In two Qualifiers For Massachusetts mid-Amateur Championship

The minimum age to compete in the Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship is 25, and as qualifying began for the championship this week, 25 players guaranteed their spot in a pair of 18-hole events held at Presidents Golf Course in Quincy and Olde Scotland Links in Bridgewater.

The Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship will take place September 3-5 at Cranberry Valley Golf Course in Harwich, one of Cape Cod’s many public course. The event is open to all amateur golfers (age 25+ as of Sept. 3, 2024) who have an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 4.0 (at the time of registration).

On Monday at Presidents GC, Zachary Kovat (Sharon Country Club) and David Russell (DW Field Golf Course) recorded bogey-free rounds 4-under-par 66, leading the way for the 12 players who qualified with a score of 69 or better. Kovat made birdie on holes 16 and 18 to close out his round.

David Spitz (South Shore Country Club), had a particularly strong finish. After shooting 1-over on the front nine, Spitz made five birdies on the back nine, including three consecutive on holes 15-17. Anthony Cipolla (The Milton-Hoosic Club) and Jonathan Scano (Vesper Country Club) also shot 67, with Cipolla started his round with three straight birdies, while Scano made six birdies. Robbie Sisca (Granite Links Golf Club) and Conor McCormack (Needham Golf Club) each made birdie on the closing hole (par-3, 135 yards) to qualify on the number.

On Tuesday at Olde Scotland Links, former Bryant standout Jake Ratti (Wollaston Golf Club) ran away with medalist honors by shooting a bogey-free 4-under 68, leading 13 qualifiers. Ratti, a quarterfinalist in this year’s Mass Amateur Championship, made birdie on all four par-5s, including the 9th and 18th. Scott Vandenburgh (Pleasant Valley Country Club), Nick Resor (Black Rock Country Club), and Parker Hodges (USGA/Mass Golf GC) all shot 71 to secure their spot in the Championship Proper.

Meanwhile, nine additional players made the cut at even-par 72. Thomas Kelly (Wollaston Golf Club), Matthew Borghi (Whitinsville Golf Club), and Brian Donovan (Blue Hill Country Club) all made birdie on the par-5 18th to secure at 72 and a spot at Cranberry Valley. Former Notre Dame golfer Alex Jamieson (Marshfield Country Club) also qualified for his first mid-amateur championship, making a pair of birdies on the back nine.
